Our Story

Hickey Memorial Chapels has been serving the Midlothian, New Lenox, and Blue Island areas for many years. We’re thankful to be an important part of these communities and will continue our longstanding legacy of helping families honor their loved ones.

The year 1928 was quite an eventful year for the Hickey family. That year, James T. Hickey and Lillian nee Burns (whose father James E. Burns established the Burns Funeral Home in Hammond, IN. in 1908), gave birth to Robert J. Hickey, their first of four children. It was also the year James & Lillian began their lifelong devotion to funeral service. The Oak Forest Undertaking Co. became Hickey Funeral Home at 159th & Cicero Ave. in Oak Forest, IL. In 1937 James opened another funeral home in Blue Island, IL. In 1948 the Oak Forest location was sold and he purchased the Heinen Funeral Home in Chicago and that was sold back to a son-in-law of the Heinen’s in the early 1950’s.

Late in the year 1953, Robert, with the help of his father bought the home of the White family in Midlothian, Illinois. In 1955 after the initial additions, the “White House” became the Hickey Funeral Home. Robert and his wife, Myrtle “Myrt”, resided there for the rest of their lives. Somehow they managed to raise 7 children in what was then a small apartment above the funeral home. In 1977 he purchased the Baskerville Chapel in New Lenox. Additions to this chapel were made in 1981.

Now into the 4th generation we remain family owned & operated and dedicated to the standards set by our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. We strive to serve all faiths of our community with dignity, compassion and integrity. Our family has always, and will continue to work to be an active and viable part of our community.
